Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
I agree that my contribution will be published under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License.
The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.

Author Guidelines

Structure

Reviews should achieve the following requirements:

1. to contextualize or to embed the reviewed book into a broader relevant scientific debate

2. to give a synopsis as also an overview of the structure of the reviewed book

3. to comment critically the reviewed book

If you like, you can structure your review in this order.

Languages: Reviews can be submitted in English, Spanish, Portuguese or German.

We welcome reviews, which are written in another language than the original book.

Formal Requirements

Title/details of the reviewed book: Author(s), title, place of publication: editorial, year, number of pages

Author (of the review) information: Name, institutional affiliation (University, Institute, project)

Length Reviews: max. 7500 characters, including blanks.

Length Review Essays: max. 15000 characters, including blanks.

Citing the reviewed book: Please avoid citations of more than 20 words.

Place in the running text using quotation marks. Refer to page of the reviewed book in parenthesis, for example: (23). Direct citations need to be in the language of the review (if this implies that the citation has to be translated, please include the original citation in a footnote).

Please do not use Footnotes

Other references: Avoid to use and include other references, except if absolutely required by the argumentation of the review (please use US-American citation style).

File: Submit the manuscript in Word in the .doc format and upload directly to CROLAR here

Grammar and spelling: Please proofread before submitting (also use the Word-spell check, and use the US-American English.

Formatting: Please use Arial font, 12 pt, 1,5 interspace. Please do not use any further formatting and submit the manuscript with ragged setting, without hyphenation and without hanging indents.

Foreign words: Please put foreign words in italics, but not names of organizations and places (e.g. remesa and Organización de los Estados Americanos).

Beyond that, do not use italics, bold characters or underlined text.

Abbreviations: Please write out when first mentioning them (followed by the abbreviation in brackets). Exceptions include very common abbreviations.

Modification[s] and omissions: […] within citations should be visualized using [squared] brackets.

Book Reviews

The journal section “Book Reviews” unites critical reviews of recent publications which reflect an actual debate within research on Latin American. The section tries to offer the interested reader an overview of a variety of approaches and perspectives that debate the common focus issue. Publications for reviews are selected from different academic backgrounds and disciplines. Moreover as far as possible a broad geographical coverage including a variety of Latin American countries or regions is presented. The topic of the thematic focus is selected by the editorial board one year in advance of the issue’s publication and communicated via a cal for reviews. To receive the call for reviews interested contributors should register to the journal. The reviews are selected by the editorial board based on the review guidelines.

Review Articles

A review article exposes and deals with a current debate in social sciences or humanities in/on Latin America. It should be based on at least 3 up-to-date contributions and - should go beyond the critical review of monographs and edited volumes by taking into account other academic products (journal articles, individual book chapters, lectures), policy papers, blogs, webpages, etc.

A critical comment on the asymmetries of knowledge production and circulation is crucial for the essay: Who and which perspective and (institutional) point of view dominate (in) the debate? (In how far) can these asymmetries be traced back to regional differences between Latin America and “Northern” academia?

Suggestions for review essays can be made to the members of the editorial team at any time. Please send us an email, outlining your idea (abstracts of maximum 250 words and naming the contributions you’d like to review).

The final review essays should not exceed 15.000 characters (incl. blanks).

Classics Revisited

The section “Classics Revisited” offers reviews classic and renowned publication which made a unique contribution to the thematic focus of the journal issue. To guarantee the quality of the reviews only senior researchers, who are acknowledged experts in their field are selected by the editorial board to choose and review a relevant publication. Principal aim of this section is to enrich actual debates with classic but still key studies in the research field.

Interventions

In the section “Interventions” CROLAR offers reviews of publications that have a scientific aim as well as a clear opinion. As in Latin America, due to the general delay of scientific research and publications various scholars try to enrich the academic debates with contributions which reflect predominantly the opinion of the authors. Such publications are often written by journalists, practitioners, politicians or academics, trying to reach a broader audience outside academic circles. Selected reviews in this section cover only such publications which gained widespread public attention and contributed crucially to an actual debate in or about Latin America. Interested contributors can submit reviews for this section at all time as long as they comply with the review guidelines of CROLAR. Submitted reviews will be selected by the editorial board on the basis of relevance and according to the CROLAR guidelines.

Current Debates

To include a broader selection of topics in every journal issue the section “Current Debates” presents critical reviews of scientific publications which contribute to latest debates within research on Latin American. Reviews in this section won’t reflect the main topic of the journal although they are nevertheless selected by the editorial board due to their relevance. Reviews for this section can be submitted at all time as long as they comply with the review guidelines of CROLAR.

Conversations

The section "Conversations" collects interviews with fictional or academic writers, film makers, and artists of all sorts.

Research Notes

Research Notes present and discuss exciting and ongoing research projects on Latin America. They can focus on empirical insights, or on theoretical or methodological reflections. Research Notes should question conceptual understandings within (a) particular field(s) of study and make propositions for future interdisciplinary research. They should include a critical inquiry of the state of the art and clearly identify their contribution to current academic debates. We only accept original research notes which have not been submitted elsewhere.

Suggestions for research notes must be related to the issue’s topic focus and can be made to the theme editors at any time. In your email, please specify your Note’s critical contribution to research on or from Latin America in an abstract of max. 150 words.

Research Notes submissions should not exceed 30,000 characters (incl. blanks, excluding list of references).
